A True Champion

All of us at Warwick Dragway would like to express our deep sadness at the loss of Mark Stewart yesterday, 8th May, 2012, in a tragic accident. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Lyn and the family at this terrible time.

Mark was always a welcome part of the Warwick Dragway family and his loss will truly be felt by track staff and racers alike.
Mark Stewart
Mark Stewart We will remember Mark as many things, an entertaining drag racer, a good joke teller, an ever ready helping hand, but most of all a friend.

Funeral service will be held at the chapel in the Crematorium at the  Garden of Remembrance, Ruthven St, Toowoomba on Wednesday May 16th at 11am

"I remember my first 6 bangers, I broke the gear stick in my dato and thought my run was over, but no Mark took me back to his home in Toowoomba, fixed the stick and back to Warwick we went. The same night Lynnie did a cam shaft, so back home again to get a new cam shaft and back to Warwick to fix Lynnie’s car   For Mark nothing was too much trouble and nowhere was too far to go to help someone he loved helping people to see them race.
Another time the 6 bangers were rained out, so Mark and Lynnie welcomed us Mexicans back to their home for the night. Mark showed us old videos, magazines and told us many a story, so many in fact that he fell asleep on the couch, coke in hand, midway through a story.
Mark told us he didn’t drink, only coke, and I guess that was so he could support Lynne because he announced at one of the meets that Lynnie was a recovering alcoholic and drag racing helped her.... Mark must of been a doctor too, because this was the first Lynnie heard of her having a drinking problem...The joking never stopped..

Mark, It is an absolute honour to know you and your family, you are a rare gem and boy will you be missed"

You left us unexpectedly, you left us far too soon.
Now it will be up to us to call the fastest tune.
Our memories of you in PANIC are embedded in our lives
We only wish we could have seen you drive the 95.
So each and every Friday night we’ll think about you Mate
Joking with each other saying you must be running late.
You will never be forgotten Mate.
Sit back and watch us race.

THE WARWICK DAILY NEWS (15th May 2012)

Drag racing devastated by death
THE Warwick District Drag Racing Club has lost one of its hardest-working members with the death last week of Six Banger Nationals organiser Mark Stewart.

THE Warwick District Drag Racing Club has lost one of its hardest-working members with the death last week of Six Banger Nationals organiser Mark Stewart.

Mark, 57, who organised the nationals each year with his wife Lyn, was fatally injured in a work accident.

Warwick club president Chris Loy said Mark was at the dragway the weekend before his death as volunteer commentator for the Mopar Muscle Meeting.

"A month ago, he brought his bobcat down (from Westbrook) for a day at the dragway and wouldn't even accept petrol money," Loy said.

After first racing in Sydney, Mark and Lyn Stewart moved north. He raced a six-cylinder super charged altered dubbed Panic.

"He was featured on the first T-shirt for Dragfest. Mark was a great volunteer for the club."

His funeral will be held tomorrow in Toowoomba. As a mark of respect, this weekend's Warwick bracket meeting has been cancelled.
